TMS Therapy in Hobart:
A Non-Medication Option for Depression
Are you or someone you know struggling with depression that hasn’t responded to medication? At Clarity Health Care, we offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at our Sandy Bay clinic in Hobart – a safe, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression.
TMS is an outpatient therapy backed by clinical research. It uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain responsible for mood regulation, offering hope for those who haven’t found relief through traditional treatments.
What is TMS?
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is an evidence-based treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) that involves using targeted magnetic pulses to activate underactive areas of the brain. It’s:
Non-invasive: no surgery, anaesthesia, or sedation required.
Well-tolerated: no systemic side effects like weight gain or sexual dysfunction.
Convenient: patients remain awake, alert, and can return to daily activities immediately after treatment.
This makes TMS an excellent alternative for people who have not had success with antidepressants, or who wish to explore non-pharmacological options.
Is TMS Right for You?
TMS may be suitable if you:
Are over 18 and have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder.
Have not responded to at least two antidepressants at adequate dose and duration.
Are looking for an alternative to medication or are not a suitable candidate for Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).
Experience side effects or intolerance to traditional medications.
Please note: TMS is not recommended for individuals with certain types of metal implants, implanted neurostimulators, or specific seizure disorders. Suitability is assessed in collaboration with your GP or psychiatrist.
How TMS Works
TMS targets the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex – an area often underactive in people with depression. Using a TMS device, a series of magnetic pulses stimulates this region, helping to improve mood and regulate emotional responses.
At Clarity Health Care, we offer two clinically validated protocols:
Standard 10 Hz Protocol: Approx. 37 minutes per session
Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation (iTBS): Approx. 6 minutes per session
Treatment usually involves 20–30 sessions over 4–6 weeks. Sessions are delivered by trained clinical staff and overseen by a psychiatrist. Follow-up and maintenance sessions can also be arranged if needed.
Evidence-based results: In a leading TMS study, 49% of patients responded and 32% achieved full remission – significantly higher than those using third-line antidepressants (17% response; 14% remission).
